Day 25: wood ears

BREAKING NEWS!

If you are a little stressed thinking about the virus that's in the news constantly...well, overwhelmed is probably a better way to couch it—couch, sofa, La-Z-boy, chaise lounge, whatever has you captive—then here is some more palatable news.

It’s a good year for wood ears!

Our fellow naturalist Darrin Baird, the roaming Man-of-the-Cumberlands, tells our news-desk that he is finding a lot of wood-ear fungus (Auricularia auricula). Darrin is a school teacher, but school is on hold so he has more time to roam.

"So?" You say. Well, if you are a fan of Chinese food, wood-ear mushroom is used in hot and sour soup.

But Darrin says he just “sautés them in butter with glee and serves them over rice.”

Yum. Sounds better than my canned peas.

Ob-la-dee, ob-la-da.
