tenacity

I guess you could call it pure stubbornness. The last two leaves that cling to a flowering dogwood long after the rest have flown the coop or dropped to terra firma.

Not ready to give up the ghost, you somehow have to admire their tenacity.

trip to bountiful

•

Flowering dogwood gets a lot of attention around these parts every April. Heck, we even have an art festival named in its honor.

But, for my money, it’s the fall when these trees put on their grandest display.

Recently I watched a group of white-throated sparrows and a female Eastern towhee take particular delight in the bright red dogwood berries. Many of the trees I’ve encountered this fall have been loaded, it seems to be a good year for soft mast.

soft mast

•

If you are a mockingbird, cedar waxwing or robin, you're in luck! The fall fruit crop, i.e. soft mast, seems to be bountiful.

The above photo is of a flowering dogwood at the Homesite at Ijams. Not only are the trees loaded but the berries, called drupes, seem plumper than normal.
